Bremerton police announced a week ago that they believe a single individual could be behind the deaths of 19-year-old Sara Burke in May 2011 and 61-year-old Melody Brannon on Feb. 3. The person of interest could also be linked to the June 2011 stabbing of a 50-year-old man in Bremerton who survived the attack.
Police have described the person as a light-skinned black or mixed-race male in his late teens or early 20s.
Just the fact he’s young is unusual, said Dr. Jack Levin, a criminologist and sociologist at Northeastern University in Boston who has studied serial killers for three decades. Often, serial killers are middle-aged men.
The case also struck investigative expert Dr. Benjamin Godwin as odd. Most serial killers stick to one gender, said Godwin, an investigations expert in North Carolina who’s penned several books on killers.
Serial killers often attack women, he said, and prostitutes are frequently targeted.
