Prosecutors had been prepared to argue that, in each October sexual assault, Vanapalli had played the part of a police officer looking for free sex. In each case, O’Donnell argued, the Microsoft employee threatened the teens in an attempt to coerce them.

“The defendant’s common scheme or plan was quite simple,” the prosecutor told the court, “pretend to be a cop so he could rape young women engaged in prostitution.” Detectives in Redmond and Bellevue were able to link the cell phone number Vanapalli had given the teens to Microsoft, where company security pointed them to Vanapalli.
