Seattle Strip Clubs: City Council Retreat: Kazoos, Cutouts, and Golden Elephants

It was no match for previous years’ karaoke-filled, out-of-town, multiday excursions, but this year’s council retreat—held last week at Seattle Center—was a marked departure from the previous several years’ staid, over-facilitated affairs, featuring kazoos, bad jokes about Tim Tebow, fake dating profiles, gold elephants,, and a larger-than-life-size (and presumably Photoshopped) cutout of a shirtless, shorts-clad Bruce Harrell.
This year, instead of presenting their own accomplishments and plans for the coming year, council members and staff did presentations for each other. Some high(low?)lights:
• Jean Godden, noting that she is “the only single councilperson,” trotted out a fake OKCupid! profile for the council’s central staff, which touted staffers’ “focus on your analytical needs and desires,” their “interests, [which include] purchasing and payroll,” and their search for someone who “can talk long into the night about plastic bags, strip clubs, and rezones”;

Roger Anderson, resplendent in a white jumpsuit, was next with “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling.” Roger is one of those Elvi who not only looks like the King, he sounds uncannily like him as well. Scott Coon, who embellished his jumpsuit with a Stars and Stripe scarf, also turned in a great sounding “It’s Now Or Never.” Mike Weber, billing himself as “Blue Calcutta,” had a purple jumpsuit, and was in good voice for “The Wonder of You.”
Clay Volt, aka Clay and the Clayettes, in a natty black suit, gave an energetic rendition of “I Got A Woman,” seguing into “Amen,” as Elvis did in concert. Kevin Fitzpatrick, also in purple, delivered a smooth “Can’t Help Falling In Love.” Chris Matthews was the comedy highlight, as “Elvis Scissorhands,” trying to woo a sweetie in “Little Sister,” handing her a Big Hunk candy bar; the little sister also did a bit of a strip tease and ended up leading this poor Elvi off stage by his scarf.

And mosque or no, parking is impossible around here. The number of businesses has grown, and so has the population. But the number of parking spaces just hasn’t kept up.
There used to be one business in the building Mohammed works in; now there are six. Linda ended up putting out a row of big cement blocks to separate her lot from the one next door.
But now the lot is always empty. Just a few days after we talked, Linda closed Trudy’s Tavern for good. Taco Time bought the land. They’ll be putting in a new restaurant — and a little more parking.
Little Mogadishu is full of contrasts: A ramshackle Somali computer repair shop is right next to a Deja Vu strip club. Or take the Abu Bakr Mosque. It’s in a building that used to be a casino.

This is CNN-76, a.k.a. the Ronald Reagan. It is a true multi-role ship. Today, it hauls cars, to keep them off I-5.
The ship costs new anywhere between $4.3 billion and $6 billion (accounts differ, assume the $4.3 b are for the stripper version). Total cost of ownership is $32 billion over the carrier’s assumed service life of 50 years, or $1.75 million for the day.
The crew sets you back another $1.40 million a day, for a total daily rate of $3.15 million.
The ship traveled from its home port in San Diego up the West Coast, to 120 Dewey Street, Bremerton, WA 98314-6012, better known as the Kitsap-Bremerton Naval Base. The Ronnie will stay there for a one year maintenance and upgrade (or make that “scheduled dock-planned incremental availability maintenance”) at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility. The crew is coming along.

… State Patrol trooper Ernest Eichorn died directing traffic at the Puyallup Fair in 1958.
• Tacoma police officer Larry L. Frost died Sept. 9, 1977, while trying to arrest a man for breaking a store window near South 64th Street and South Tacoma Way. The man wrestled Frost’s gun away, jumped on top of him and shot him.
• State Liquor Control Board senior enforcement agent Mel Journey was shot Nov. 15, 1977, in his driveway as he left for work by two gunmen who ran down the street. He recovered but later contracted hepatitis C from the tainted blood that saved his life. He died in January 1999. The investigation into his attack uncovered a widespread racketeering ring involving topless bars in Pierce County, ending with the indictment of 15 men, including Sheriff George Janovich.

Seattle Strip Clubs: Lawmakers Consider Overhaul of Initiative System

Indictment Against Stripper
A judge in Anchorage has dismissed a murder indictment against Mechele Linehan, who was accused of conspiring to kill her former fiancé. She’s a former Anchorage stripper who eventually settled in Olympia and was convicted in 2007 of killing Kent Leppink, who was shot on an isolated trail 11 years earlier. Prosecutors had argued she was inspired by watching the 1994 movie “The Last Seduction.” Linehan and John Carlin III had plotted to kill Leppink in hopes of receiving $1 million in life insurance money, they said, and a jury agreed. But the Alaska Appeals Court tossed out the conviction in 2010. State prosecutors decided to retry Linehan in Leppink’s death. But a judge on Thursday tossed out the grand jury indictment, citing an evidence issue. VNC

Seattle Strip Clubs: Shoreline Planning Commission Makes Recommendations on Medical Marijuana

The Planning Commission struck language from the development code that would require collective gardens to be more than 1,000 feet apart. The main reason for this during the discussion was that law enforcement opinion on policing collective gardens clustered together versus spread apart seemed to be mixed. A cluster of gardens could perhaps be a target for criminal activity, but also could be easier to keep an eye on by police. The Commission kept language that keeps collective gardens 1,000 feet away from schools, as a city map shows.
The Planning Commission also added language that a person seeking to establish a legal, collective garden would have to obtain a safety license from the city. A safety license is also required of adult entertainers such as strippers who operate in the city.

Seattle Strip Clubs: Residents Consider Potential Facelift for Lake Forest Park’s Southern Gateway

… We’re looking at a fifteen to twenty-year plan,” said commission co-chair George Piano. Without a city plan there will be sporadic development that goes to the highest bidder, like strip development, and does little to improve the standard of living and aesthetics.
Piano also stressed that the Southern Gateway is not a viable economic community and that by expanding that tax base, property taxes for the rest of LFP can be kept under control.
The majority of the time was spent in small groups evaluating concrete options that were brainstormed at a previous meeting, like creating a gateway at 145th or zoning the Elks Club for offices, using criteria such as “improves identity” and “good for business and economy.”
Many attendees were concerned about the Déjà Vu strip club, considered an eye-sore in the community.

Seattle Strip Clubs: Extra, Extra, and an Obit for Gordon Clinton

Former Seattle Mayor Gordon Clinton, the man who founded the Seattle Human Rights Commission, and who established Seattle’s first sister city (Kobe, Japan), and who is credited as being largely responsible for the construction of Seattle Center, died yesterday–but for some reason, received little fanfare. Today, the Mayor released a statement about Clinton, which was both heartfelt and slightly late.
We tip our hats to Gordon Clinton.
And now, for the headlines. Which aren’t quite awesome enough to do it justice, but we work with what we’ve got.
In true Seattle style…the weather is terrible! And is going to stay terrible! Speaking of things that will probably stay terrible (or at least snotty), Colton Harris-Moore is just a hop, skip, and a barefooted jump from a plea deal. What’s more terrible about this situation: that a local strip club as invited Courtney Stodden to dance for them…or that they only offered her $5,000? And finally–a kid in Bellingham saved his mother from an attacker…with a BB gun! This is our favorite news story all day.
